Do Spiders Eat Cockroaches? A Hidden Pest-Control Ally

Do Spiders Eat Cockroaches

Cockroaches and spiders are both pests with almost the same hiding spaces, and they both roam around the house and outdoor spaces at night.

Suppose at night they encounter each other; what they are going to do? Which one acts as the predator? The answer most of us predict is the spider because they are more venomous and active.

But the answer is not so simple, you have to learn about it thoroughly because not all spiders eat cockroaches. So keep patience and continue reading.

What Kind of Spiders Eat Cockroaches?

Spiders in general are predators because they hunt every insect which comes in their way or can easily be handled. But the specific part is that the size of spider also matter a lot. Small  spider cannot handle a big American cockroach whereas fully grown spider can easily handle a big size cockroach.

Fact: Small spiders also consume cockroaches if they trap in their web.

Which Spiders Are Most Likely to Eat Cockroaches?

Different spider species handle cockroaches differently, for example:

Huntsman spiders are fastest and largest, which is why they effectively handle cockroaches.

Wolf spiders use their strength and speed to hunt cockroaches. They prefer smaller cockroaches.

Wolf Spider

jumping spiders β€” The most aggressive ones with exceptional eyesight which make them good hunters. They prefer cockroach nymphs.

Jumping Spider

Cellar spiders β€” They trap cockroaches in their web and do not directly hunt them but their web is not so strong with little effort cockroaches can easily escape. That is why they occupy only small ones.

Brown Recluse Spiders β€” They use their venom to attack cockroaches. Within seconds the cockroach becomes immobilised.

How Does a Spider Take Down a Cockroach?

Spider hunts cockroaches in two ways:

Passive Hunting_Trapping in Web: This is not a hard and fast method because spiders have to attack rapidly after a cockroach gets tangled.

Otherwise cockroach antennae detects threat and ultimately its escape response get activated. But once a spider bites a cockroach, its escape response becomes useless because venom makes it immobile.

Active Hunting/Chasing: In this hunting style, spiders like huntsman spiders simply chase a cockroach, catch it, and bite it to transfer venom. After that, in leisure time, the spider consumes it.

Scientific Research on Spiders Eating Cockroaches

Study 1: Scientists published their study in the Journal of Venomous Animals and Toxins, including Tropical Diseases. In this study, they experimented on spiders by putting cockroaches in front of them. Both male and female spiders consume the cockroach.

Study 2: Here, scientists used the venom of six spiders and put it on a cockroach; it was immediately paralysed. This demonstrates how spiders’ venom helps them to hunt cockroaches.

Can Spiders Control Cockroaches in a House?

No, spiders do not help to control the population of cockroaches in your house. Because cockroaches multiply rapidly, and they hide themselves in deep cracks where spiders cannot reach. So, a single spider cannot kill an entire cockroach infestation.
