Why Do Ants Carry Dead Ants

Have you watched ants carrying one another? If yes, then it definitely bothers you a lot. Maybe you question yourself, “What are they doing?” or find it unusual; however, the answer will surely surprise you.

This Behavior is Called Necrophoresis:

This strange behavior or practice performed by ant are named Necrophoresis by scientist. Ants do this to make sure the sustainable survival of the colony.

The Real Reason: Hygiene

As soon as decomposition begins in an ants dead body, a chemical name oleic acid strarts to be released. Therefore, worker ants carry the dead body to an ants graveyard for two reasons:

  • To prevent the spread of disease because the oleic acid can cause detremental diseases in ants colony.
  • To Protect the colony from predators, as oleic acid’s smell can attract them and they will attack and destroy the colony.

How Do Ants Know Another Ant Is Dead?

Ants do not use their visual ability to recognize either the other ant is dead or not, instead they rely on the chemical signals coming out from the dead body. If oleic acid releases more than a sufficient threshold, working ants get immediately alert.

They bring that specific ant to ant graveyard, no matter if the ant is still alive and chemical release is happening because of some other reason in the ant body.

There is also a research conduct to prove this fact, they put oleic aicd on a live ant. Worker ants immediately took that ant to midden, the live ant starts walking back to the colony, workers ants did not allow that ant to enter in the colony till the chemical faded.

Do Ants Mourn?

Ants do not show any emotion of grieve like humans do because their response of dead ant removal from the colony is totally instict driven and chemical dependent.
